Autiqa TCO methodology guide
Petrol versus EV ownership costs in India
Arithmetic examples explain the method; enter current prices and your own operating assumptions.
Compare the same usage and holding period
Use the same annual kilometres, holding period and financing basis for both cars. Include on-road price, registration, insurance, maintenance, charging equipment and expected resale. A lower energy bill alone does not establish a lower total ownership cost.
Calculate energy costs from your actual rates
Petrol cost per km equals the price per litre divided by real-world km per litre. EV energy cost per km equals kWh per km multiplied by the electricity tariff, including charging losses. Weight home and public charging by your expected usage. At an illustrative ₹100/litre and 15 km/litre, petrol costs ₹6.67/km. At 0.15 kWh/km and ₹10/kWh, electricity costs ₹1.50/km before losses.
Check the extra upfront cost
In that illustrative example, ₹2 lakh of extra upfront cost divided by ₹5.17/km of energy savings implies about 38,700 km to recover the difference using energy alone. Financing, insurance, maintenance, charging losses and resale can change that result. Use the calculator to compare the full cost, and test a higher public-charging tariff or lower resale value.
Review local inputs before deciding
Obtain an actual dealer quote and your electricity bill. Check applicable registration charges and current incentives with the relevant state authority. Autiqa's editable assumptions provide a starting point; they are not an official quote.
Method: total cost = acquisition + finance and running costs − resale. The calculator shows and lets you edit its assumptions before using them.
